As states across the country grapple with the fiscal impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, some Republican state lawmakers are calling for the death penalty to be one of the first budget items to be cut.
Dozens of GOP state lawmakers have sponsored death penalty repeal bills this year because they recognize the death penalty wastes millions of dollars each year while failing to provide improved public safety outcomes.
As states are struggling to fund the most basic of needs during the pandemic, these lawmakers believe ending the death penalty is an obvious cut.
In addition to being a wasteful government program, they say the death penalty is, ineffective, error-prone, and does not value life.
Earlier this year, before the pandemic hit full force, Colorado lawmakers voted to repeal their state’s death penalty, and Republicans played a key role.
