The Case for Traveling on Fourth of July Weekend

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Places and reasons to celebrate all things red, white and blue across the United States of America are in abundance at Marriott International hotels. With the best venues to view fireworks, ways to participate in America’s favorite pastimes, and restaurants innovating with iconic summer foods such as s’mores, you can go-local in a host of iconic locations around the nation.

Where are the most star-spangled light shows?

According to Marriott International’s Inaugural Summer Travel Trends Report, the top five most-searched destinations for Independence Day reflect a desire to celebrate in vibrant cities:

  • New Orleans
  • New York
  • Chicago
  • Orlando
  • San Diego

New Orleans is the number one city on the list of popular searched destinations for Fourth of July and it will not disappoint. Travelers can experience a modern hotel at the Renaissance New Orleans Pere Marquette French Quarter Area Hotel before taking in fireworks on the Mississippi River. The unique fireworks display is set to the tune of patriotic music.

New York City is home to one of the nation’s most sizzling Independence Day fireworks displays and visitors can take in the spectacular views at the Brooklyn waterfront just a quick stroll away from the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge.

For the foodies, during 100 days of summer in the Windy City it’s worth grabbing a signature Chicago dog, (no ketchup allowed!). For a stay with a view, the W Chicago-Lakeshore overlooks the shores of Lake Michigan and Navy Pier which has some amazing fireworks. Head to Florida and you can try a new take on the iconic summer treat, s’mores in Orlando.  The Chocolate S’mores Pot Pie dessert at Highball & Harvest at The Ritz-Carlton, Orlando is made with warm chocolate cake topped with toasted marshmallows, graham crackers, and two scoops of smoked buttermilk ice cream which literally melts in your mouth.

To ‘Get your grub on’, head to the annual BBQ dinner hosted by Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa on the pier where guests have a perfect view of the Big Bay Boom Fireworks Show above the San Diego Bay. With nearby attractions celebrating the holiday weekend, there is no shortage of food, fun and fireworks for the whole family.

Nowhere in the country puts on a fireworks display like Washington D.C.  In the nation’s capital, you can walk to all the festivities from JW Marriott Washington, DC.  Special events include the National Independence Day Parade, a concert on the West Lawn, free entrance to 11 Smithsonian museums, and a fireworks show on the National Mall.

The largest ballpark (by capacity) in the US, will be lighting up the Elysian Park neighborhood of Los Angeles on July 4thwith a special fireworks show. Less than 15 minutes from the stadium, the rooftop pool at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE is a great place to cool off before heading to the game.

To unleash your inner child this Independence Day, journey to the Outlook Kitchen and Bar at The Envoy Hotel in Boston and order the whimsical Campfire Torte which has a playful twist on the summer campfire staple. Open the mason jar and the aromatic plume of smoke sits you mindfully next to a campfire roasting marshmallows.

In St. Louis, true fans eat, sleep and breathe baseball – and at the Westin St. Louis, they can do just that. With a location directly across the street from the stadium, guests will never miss the opening pitch at the nine home games from July 1st to July 9th. On Independence Day, fans will be able to take home souvenir socks after the game.
