When Empathy Backfires: The Leadership Relational Trap

Reading Time: 2 minutes

INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.

Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed Paula Castillo.

On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed leadership coach Paula Castillo, PCC.

They explored a common challenge for high-empathy leaders—especially those shaped by cultures that value deep connection—which Paula calls the Relational Trap. When tension arises at work, many leaders instinctively try to “fix” the relationship by leaning in harder: listening more, accommodating more, and amplifying empathy. But attempting to resolve structural issues—like unclear roles, competing priorities, or misaligned expectations—through warmth rather than clarity can backfire, eroding the trust and collaboration leaders are trying to build.
In the episode, Paula explains how easy it is to fall into the Relational Trap and offers a practical framework for stepping out of it—helping leaders reclaim authority without losing connection.
Paula Castillo is an ICF Professional Certified Coach (PCC) specializing in leadership identity.
